SPIRITUAL GIFTS

At First Presbyterian Church (FPC), we are committed to helping our members grow spiritually. One way we do this is by helping them discover their spiritual gifts and find God's calling for their life.

Spiritual gifts are unique endowments from the Holy Spirit. They are Proclamation, Servanthood, Teaching the Faith, Encouragement, Generosity, Nurturing Leadership, Mercy, Wisdom, Knowing, Faith, Healings, Miracles, Discernment, Tongues, Interpretation of Tongues, Apostleship, Helping, Visionary and Managing Leadership, Evangelism, and Shepherding. The Scriptures tell us that every Christian has been given at least one of these and that it is to be used to help others.

YOUTH MINISTRY

Youth at First Presbyterian Church are ACTIVE in their Christian faith, with an emphasis on EXPERIENCING Christ’s love and call to service. Youth meet weekly during the school year, usually on Sunday evenings. Our goals are FUN, FAITH, & SERVICE. In 2008-09, these have been some of our activities: family picnic, cardboard box city for Family Promise, hay maze, Operation Christmas Child, attending “Julian of Norwich” play, Angel Tree shopping, sledding, Souper Bowl of Caring, monthly Food Bank Sundays, and 2 Youth Sundays.

ROCKHAVEN CAMP

Rockhaven is located at the base of Sheep Rock in the spectacular Gallatin Canyon half way between Bozeman and Big Sky, Montana on US Hwy 191 at milepost 67, the road to Yellowstone National Park.

This 10 acre church camp facility includes a winterized kitchen and dining hall, dormitory, showers and restrooms as well as a log chapel.  A foot bridge over the Gallatin River provides access to Trinity Meadow on the east side of the river; where guests can enjoy an outdoor vesper dell, a low ropes challenge course and a 9 circuit prayer Labyrinth.

During the summer months, beginning on Father's Day and concluding the Sunday before Labor Day weekend, evening vespers are held each Sunday at 7:00 pm in beautiful and rustic Rockhaven Chapel.  The vesper service is preceded by a potluck supper in the dining hall, and on many Sundays there are special events that happen before supper.

FAMILY PROMISE

Family Promise of Gallatin Valley is a non-profit network of faith organizations working together to help Gallatin Valley's homeless families with children. As the only program helping homeless families in our community, Family Promise volunteers provide shelter and meals, and the staff assists each family to develop and implement lasting solutions to their unique situation. Over 80% of the families completing the program have successfully attained stable housing and employment. Although homelessness is largely invisible to most of us, there is a steadily growing population of homess families.

Family Promise works so well and efficiently because of the personal commitment of everyone involved, including a large number of volunteers from more than eighteen congregations of diverse faith traditions working together in the truest spirit of giving.

Contact Betsy Crabs for more information at 585-1465 or by email at emc0108@hotmail.com.

PRAYER SHAWL MINISTRY

Prayer shawls are made and presented to those undergoing medical procedures or during illness and recovery; as a comfort after loss or during prayer or meditation; shawls are also given as celebrations of marriage or birth.  Many blessings are knitted into every shawl.  The knitter begins each shawl with prayers for the recipient and continues prayerfully throughout the creation of the shawl.  Knitters, crochet-ers and those who want to learn, meet at First Presbyterian Church, Tuesdays at 3pm to knit, crochet and socialize.

For more information on the ministry or how you can participate, contact June Dennin, 586-9194.

WOMEN'S STUDY FELLOWSHIP

The Thursday Morning Women's Study Fellowship meets at 6:50 am every Thursday during the school year.  We can be found in Room 204 waiting for the sun to come in and warm us as we drink coffee, eat treats and discuss our latest book.  We read a variety of books during the year and are always happy to have new friends join us and give suggestions for books.  We try to end by 8 am so working gals can get to their jobs.

Call Joanne Jennings 586-9585 with further questions.

HOSPITAL VISITORS

The hospital visitors program is a direct product of the Spiritual Gifts program.  Our mission is to provide a daily visitor to the hospital to contact any congregational members who might be patients.  Our clergy set a schedule for us to cover days which are not available.  This summer will begin our ninth year of this ministry.

First,  you must feel called to do this sort of pastoral visiting.  Participants are then trained by the senior chaplain at the hospital.  We are identified by the hospital as being part of the pastoral care team.  We generally work on a 3 month schedule and currently have 8 people participating in the program.  In any 3 month cycle, participants average about 4 visits to the hospital.  New people are always welcome.

OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD

Operation Christmas Child is a ministry through Samaritan’s Purse.  It involves adults and children expressing true meaning of Christmas – the love of Jesus Christ by packing shoe boxes with items of necessity and fun for children in desperate situations around the world.  The program begins in Oct. and the boxes are shipped out by mid Nov. with love and joy for these victimized children.  We at FPC, Bozeman sent 407 boxes last year.

WOMEN'S ECUMENICAL BIBLE STUDY

Women’s Ecumenical Bible Study (WEBS) is sponsored by First Presbyterian, Bozeman United Methodist, St. James Episcopal and Hope Lutheran Churches.  Our mission is to offer women from a variety of denominations and church backgrounds a safe and engaging environment to study the Bible and explore faith questions.  Each session is hosted by one of the sponsoring churches and run from 4-8 weeks, depending on the topic of study.  Meetings are held at the host church Monday mornings 10-11:45.

Contact June Dennin at First Presbyterian Church, 586-9194; Kay Lansverk at Bozeman United Methodist, 586-5413; Valerie Webster at St James, 586-9093; or Jennifer Wilson at Hope Lutheran, 586-5572 for more information.

VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL

Vacation Bible School   VBS is a ministry of Bozeman United Methodist, First Presbyterian and First Baptist Churches that runs for one week in June form 8:45-12:00 noon.  VBS is not just a kids event; it is an intergenerational, ecumenical family party with hundreds of kids, teenage youth assistants, parents, single adults and many, many older people.  The program is for children 4 years old through entering the 6th grade.

Contact Becca Syme at Bozeman United Methodist Church, 579-6864 for information.

FEED YOUR SOUL

Feed Your Soul   Wednesday evenings we gather in the Fellowship Hall for food, fellowship and Bible study.  At 5:30 the meal is served and from 6:15-7:00 there are activities for the kids and Bible study for adults.

Starting October 14, 2009 we will begin a six-week study that will focus on spiritual growth led by Co-Pastor Jody McDevitt. The first two weeks we’ll seek a common understanding of “Spirituality 101", followed by a one week “Introduction to Spiritual Disciplines”. For the final three weeks, the group will select from several options: Reformed Spirituality, Forgiveness, Simplicity, Spiritual Practices for Families; Gratitude as a Spiritual Discipline; and Celtic Spirituality. These options, led by able volunteers, will allow the groups to be smaller. We hope that those with similar interests will consider continuing exploring topics of spiritual growth together after this fall’s Feed Your Soul concludes. Everyone is welcome!

COMPASSIONATE FRIENDS

The Compassionate Friends is a national self-help, mutual assistance organization offering friendship, understanding, and hope to bereaved parents and their families.  Our twofold mission is to assist families toward the positive resolution of grief following the death of a child and to provide information to help others be supportive.

The Bozeman Chapter is one of more than 600 chapters in the United States; the National Office is in Oak Brook, Illinois. The Compassionate Friends has no religious affiliation. The chapter has no employees; leadership roles are filled by member volunteers who work in honor of their children, siblings, or grandchildren who have died.

Meetings: 1st Thursday of every month 7:00-8:30 PM

Meetings are open to parents, adult siblings, and grandparents of children who have died at any age, from any cause. Other adult family members are also welcome.

PRAYER CHAIN MINISTRY

If you have a heart for prayer for individuals who are sick or in need this ministry would like to extend an invitation to join us.   There are five chains, each person in them praying in their homes for different people and their needs.

ADULT FORUM

This discussion group studies the Bible, examines relevant aspects of church history, and seeks to understand what it means to live the Christian life today.  Discussions usually begin by giving attention to a presentation by the leader or one of the members.  The group meets September—May at 4 pm on Wednesdays for one hour in room 204. Contact Larry VandeCreek (406-522-7586; Lvandecreek2001@yahoo.com) or the church office for more information as needed.  All are welcome!

DEACONS

Deacons serve the congregation in a variety of ways. Our primary focus is caring for people, both in our church and the community at large. We serve as nurturers, visiting the homebound and helping those with emergency needs such as temporary lodging, transportation, or food. We sponsor two school nursing programs at local schools, provide warm clothing to needy school children each fall, and prepare and deliver Thanksgiving and Easter food baskets to undernourished families. The deacons also organize receptions after funeral services, host the coffee hours each Sunday after worship hour, and provide crisis meals to families in the congregation during difficult times. The deacons can be thought of as the "hearts and hands" of our church.

Current Moderator of the Board of Deacons and contact person: Nancy Rote 219-3154
